Quai Branly Museum : innovative and fascinating

Categories : What to do in Paris, published on : 7/19/13

Quai Branly Museum offers a unique and fresh perspective on global culture in an inspiring and innovative setting. It is a museum of non-Western arts which stresses the amazing diversity of ethnology and art to be found in Asia, Oceania, Africa and the Americas. Enjoying the patronage of UNESCO, the Quai Branly features indigenous art and cultural artefacts and emphasises the history and meaning of the works and the cultures from which they arise, via both permanent and temporary exhibitions. This approach has led to the museum becoming one of the most popular attractions in Paris. There's also plenty of activities to keep the children entertained. The Hotel Eden is a pleasant half hour's stroll from the Quai Branly Museum.

Quai Branly Museum: A new look at our world heritage

Designed by famed architect Jean Nouvel, the Quai Branly Museum for tribal art was opened in 2006. The buildings feature blocks of colour, a tall glass frontage, the incorporated works of Australian aboriginal artists, and a living wall of greenery combining their charms to entice the visitor within. Enveloped in lush verdure, the complex contains five buildings, a multimedia library and boasts a beautiful garden with paths and ponds, a wonderful place for reflection.

The museum holds some 267,000 items in its permanent collection and displays about three and a half thousand of these in a constant rotation. Here you can see a Siberian shaman's cloak, frescoes from Ethiopia, masks, costumes, textiles and art of both cultural and personal significance. There is also an astounding exhibit of more than 10,000 musical instruments held in a magnificent glass tower. Temporary exhibitions are also held, each focusing on a specific aspect of indigenous cultures.
