Beautiful gardens in Paris are a feast for the senses

The Luxembourg Gardens are a stately reminder of the grandeur of formal French gardens, and all in the heart of the city. They're the home of the French Senate, which oversees the gardens and the adjoining Luxembourg Museum.

The gardens date back to the early 1600s, the brainchild of Marie de Medicis, widow of King Henry IV of France, and originally from Florence. Her idea of an Italian garden along formal lines was the forerunner of many great French gardens, from Versailles to the Chateaux of the Loire Valley.

When you visit, imagine yourself as royalty as you walk around, or simply sit on one of the chairs placed along the paths. Take time to see the spectacular Medici Fountain and look out for the famous faces among the dozens of statues - and the original model for New York's Statue of Liberty.

A visit to the Luxembourg Museum is essential, housed in a grand old building. The current exhibition, until June 29, celebrates the extraordinary life of the Empress Josephine, through Old Master paintings and intriguing personal momentos.
